As the trail to Everest Base Camp has become more and more crowded, a need arose to find an alternative route that would be equally spectacular in terms of the mountain experience and the views of the world's tallest peak. The route we have chosen, up to Milk Lake and Gokyo Ri, surpassed the traditional route and our expectations as well.
As we follow the Dudh Kosi River toward its source, we feel ourselves drawn onward by the majestic Cho Oyu (26,750'), always before us as we walk. Leaving the inhabited world behind, we pass through seasonal yak herding pastures until, at last, we reach our high camp on the shores of Dudh Pokhari (Milk Lake).
From here we make the day hike up to Gokyo Ri, at 17,990' the highest point on the trek, returning to our camp in time for dinner. The view of Everest from here is now widely agreed to be better than that from Kala Pattar, with more of the body of the mountain visible. On our walk back out we'll make a side trip to Dingboche and the fabled Thyangboche Monastery to savor what many consider the most beautiful spot in Nepal. We fly out from Syangboche.
