CLASSIC SWITZERLAND:
THE BERNESE OBERLAND
10 days, 6 days of moderate-to-strenuous inn-to-inn hiking from Griesalp to Grindelwald -- Switzerland's famous Bernese Oberland!
The Bernese Oberland is one of the most celebrated alpine regions in Europe, home to the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau - a hiker's and photographer's paradise. To anyone who's been there, the reasons are obvious. In addition to some of the most dramatic mountain walls and faces to be found anywhere in the world, it contains sturdy old farmhouses framed by picture perfect green pastures, charming mountain chalets, and traditional Swiss hospitality.
After meeting as a group in Zurich, we'll travel by train to the Kiental, a quiet mountain valley that has escaped the ski and resort development phenomenon which has gripped much of the Alps. The first two days will be spent unwinding and enjoying the local hikes through meadows and past waterfalls with our first rewarding views of the surrounding peaks.
With Murren as our next destination, we ascend out of the Kiental and across the Sefinenfurke (8,600'), bringing us face-to-face with the Jungfrau chain -- massive rock walls and tier upon tier of glaciers set high above the green patchwork of summer pastures. Descending to Gimmelwald via cable car, we then hike up to the Obersteinberg, accessible by foot only, far from any villages or resorts. From here we will use our mountain legs, a train and an old-fashioned cog-railroad to reach Schynige Platte, the starting point for possibly our most exciting and scenic walk through Faulhorn, past the crystal clear waters of the Bachalpsee and down to Grindelwald by cable-car.
Our nights will be spent in comfortable mountain hotels and inns, enjoying a delicious cuisine.
